The Brimstone Journals by Ron Koertge

This book was recommended by a student at UTM in my Children's Lit course and I loved it.  I have recommended it to several "teacher friends" as it offers a raw and very real look at what some students face everyday!

As I read this book, I made several connections, as many of the characters made me think of students that I have taught.  Until we take the time to consider that teaching is much more than standards and tests, we will not reach our potential!  While I do believe that we need standards to provide a framework and direction...I also believe that we can not overlook our students' background knowledge and prior experiences.

As teachers, we spend relatively very little time with students....their initial contact and experiences are at HOME...and certainly not all homes provide positive, learning experiences.
