For me, reading has always been a passion and a lifelong habit. I was lucky in that I was read to as a child and we made many trips to our local library. In upper elementary school, I actually served as a reading tutor to younger, emergent readers.
It seems only fitting that I would (later) become a reading teacher to struggling readers in middle school and continue to study literacy as I earned my M.Ed. in Reading Education and my Ed.D in Curriculum & Instruction, with an emphasis on reading.
Today, I teach graduate and undergraduate reading methods courses, children and young adolescent literature courses and serve as the Director of the Reading Center and Reading Clinic on the beautiful campus of UTM.
I stumbled upon this visual on Twitter and thought it served as a fabulous reminder of many research-based reasons why it is so important to read more! I believe that role models (often, teachers) teach students to read, but more importantly, motivate them to read! We need to engage students in ACTIVE reading and lead them to become independent readers.
How do you impact reading?
