The world has lost another great author! Umberto Eco passed away on February 19, 2016 at the age of 84. He is best known for his book, The Name of the Rose. I read this book in college in an undergraduate communications class. It is one of my favorite books, which is a mystery about murders taking place in an Italian monastery. It was also made into a movie, starring Sean Connery. Of course, for me, I preferred the book. I find it often difficult to gain the depth of knowledge, engagement, and emotion in a movie as compared to a book. One of my favorite quotes by Eco:
"I believe that what we become depends on what our fathers teach us at odd moments, when they aren't trying to teach us. We are formed by little scraps of wisdom."
As a teacher, this quote makes me think about teachable moments that naturally occur throughout the day; those moments that do not appear in our lesson plans, but occur out of a great discussion, experience, or interaction with one another.
